How To Make Magnesium Hot Chocolate For Sleep

Here’s a recipe for magnsesium hot chocolate for sleep for only 13 cents per serving. It’s a great Moonbrew alternative and cheaper than Magnesium pills for sleep!

Maybe you’ve heard about the benefits of taking a magnesium supplement for sleep and want to find an affordable way to start taking one?

Well I’ve tried taking magnesium pills several times over the years and the trouble is

  • I’m not a fan of swallowing 3-4 huge pills before bedtime to get the recommended daily allowance
  • Those pills get EXPENSIVE quickly

So when I first saw an ad for a magnesium hot chocolate I was intrigued! It seemed like a great alternative to pills.

However the drawback to brands such as Moonbrew is also price. I can’t justify spending $48 per month ($1.60 per day) on this.

So I set out to discover if I could create a recipe for magnesium hot chocolate myself – here’s how it went!

What Form of Magnesium is Best For Sleep?

magnesium pills for sleep

With just a few minutes of research you’ll find that there are many different forms of magnesium supplements that have different health benefits.

The form overwhelmingly recommended for improving sleep is magnesium glycinate

Of course this isn’t medical advice and you should ALWAYS check with your doctor before taking any new vitamin, mineral, or supplement.

I was able to confirm that this is the form of magnesium used in the magnesium hot chocolate mixes being sold – so I knew I was on the right track!

How Much Magnesium To Take?

magnesium glycinate powder

Here are the recommended daily allowances for magnesium glycinate according to the Mayo Clinic

  • For men: 400 mg for ages 19 – 30, 420 mg for ages 31+
  • For women: 310 mg for ages 19 – 30, 320 mg for ages 31+
  • For children: 80 mg for ages 1 – 3 years, 130 mg for ages 4 – 8 years, 240 mg for ages 9 – 13 years
  • For teens: 410 mg for males ages 14 – 18 years, 360 mg for females ages 14 – 18 years

So I started shopping for a magnesium glycinate supplement that would get me close to the RDA for my age group (320 mg).

I found this magnesium glycinate powder on Amazon – the bag contained 250 servings with 300 mg of magnesium per serving – perfect for my needs.

The best part is that the cost per serving was only 6 cents. Now this I can afford.

First you need to know that the magnesium powder taken by itself is disgusting. I tried it in some tea and immediately threw the cup out.

So the hot chocolate really is needed to mask the taste of the powder. But I found I could make it with very little added sugar to keep the calorie count down.

Brands like Moonbrew use monk fruit to sweeten their hot chocolate which REALLY keeps the calories low, so if you’re concerned about that you could definitely go that route!

For my palate, I was able to make a concoction that was drinkable with:

  • one scoop of magnesium powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar
  • water and milk to your liking

The mix only contains 22 calories per serving (plus any milk you add).

It’s pretty simple to whip up a mug of this hot chocolate. First, just add the three ingredients to your mug.

Then pour some very hot water or milk into the cup – but don’t fill the mug more than half way!

mixing the hot chocolate

That’s because you will definitely want to use a cheap drink frother like this to mix up your hot chocolate! I found a spoon doesn’t do the trick and leaves residue at the bottom of the mug.

But spin this frother around for 10-15 seconds and all of the powders will dissolve.

Then I top the drink up with more hot water or milk to taste.

My Results With This Magnesium Hot Chocolate Recipe

After taking this supplement for a few weeks I am happy to report better overall sleep quality. In particular, I am waking up less often during the night and finding it easier to fall back asleep when I do!

The total cost for this recipe is 13 cents per serving (plus the cost of any milk you add). This the cheapest way to get your RDA of magnesium by far that I have found.
