air fried mushrooms

In the past, fried mushrooms are something I would only order at a restaurant. I’d cross my fingers and hope that they would arrive crispy and NOT with mushy breading.

Well, it turns out that you can make delicious and crispy air fry mushrooms at home that will best any restaurant.

Read on for my tips and tricks for how to make incredible healthy air fryer breaded mushrooms at home!

Fried Mushrooms Air Fryer Prep

baby bella and white button mushrooms

I tried two different types of mushrooms for this breaded mushroom recipe – baby bella and white button. I preferred the taste of the baby bellas but the white mushrooms turned out delicious as well.

And here is my most important tip for getting good results:

Do NOT wash your mushrooms.

If you want to clean them, just wipe them down with a slightly damp paper towel. They should be dry before you start to coat them with the egg wash and breading.

sliced mushrooms on a cutting board

Next, I recommend slicing them into halves or quarters, depending on their size. If you have really small mushrooms you could also fry them whole.

As far as the stems go, that is totally up to you. I cut some of the longer ones down and left shorter stems on.

fork dipping mushroom in egg batter

After you have prepared your egg and water mixture and breading mix, I suggest using a fork to dip the mushrooms in the egg and then the breading.

I used my other hand to kinda press breading onto the mushrooms.

And then I used another fork to gently push the mushroom onto the plate.

Once you have a batch breaded, you’ll lightly coat them with oil from a sprayer next.

misto olive oil sprayer for air fried mushrooms

I have had this affordable Misto Oil Sprayer for over a decade and I still love it. I’ve filled it up with olive oil again and again! You can use any kind of oil you prefer, of course.

I suggest spraying both sides of the mushrooms so that no dry flour remains.

Your air fry mushrooms will turn out so much better if you are thorough with this step!

How To Cook Air Fry Breaded Mushrooms

breaded air fry mushroom arranged in basket

You may have to cook the mushrooms in two batches if you have a small air fryer like me. I love my little Bella 1.6 quarter fryer from Macy’s because it fits right under my counter.

Then arrange your mushrooms in a single layer in your air fryer basket. It’s okay if they are touching a little but you definitely don’t want to pile any on top of each other.

I recommend cooking them for 5-7 minutes at 375 degrees.

The time will vary depending on your air fryer and how many mushrooms you are cooking at a time.

You’ll want to shake them once after a few minutes or even flip them over with a fork/tongs.

It will help them cook evenly and not have any mushy breading.

If there still appears to be some wet breading, I suggest flipping them around and putting them back in for 1-2 more minutes.

You’ll want them to be a golden brown when they are done, just like these little beauties.

Please give them several minutes to cool since the inside will be WICKED hot when you first pull them out.

It’s surprising how long they stay hot so no worries about eating them right away.

I hope you enjoy your crispy air fry mushrooms!

This is definitely my favorite air fryer breaded mushroom recipe.

Air Fry Mushroom Recipe

Super crispy and flavorful air fry mushrooms! Healthier than deep fried mushrooms. Easy mushrooms in the air fryer.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 7 minutes
Additional Time 3 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 oz fresh mushrooms (baby bella or white)
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • pinch of pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp water
  • oil spray (I use olive oil but any will do)

Instructions

If needed, wipe mushrooms down with a damp paper towel to clean them. Do not wash them.

Slice mushrooms into halves or quarters, depending on their size.

Mix dry ingredients (flour, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, salt, paprika, garlic powder, and pepper) in a bowl.

In a separate bowl, beat eggs lightly and mix in 1 tsp of water.

Preheat air fryer to 375 degrees.

With a fork, dip each mushroom first into the egg batter, then into the dry ingredients, coating thoroughly. Place mushrooms on a plate.

Spray all mushrooms with an oil spray, flipping once and being sure to lightly coat all surfaces. No dry flour should remain.

Bake in fryer 5-7 minutes depending on size. Shake contents after a few minutes to cook evenly. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in several batches.

Wait several minutes for mushrooms to cool. The inside will be VERY hot and will burn your mouth!

Hi, can I use Pablo breadcrumbs

It was OK. There was too much bread crumb for me and my wife. I had extra wash and dry mix. I tried sliced carrot sticks and Vidalia onion, again too much bread crumb. I have this bookmarked and will try it again without bread crumbs.

I assume by grated Parmesan cheese, you mean the very fine kind that is usually found in a can. Can you make them with shredded Parmesan cheese instead of the grated? Kim

I haven't tried that myself but I assume it would be fine? I used grated Parm (the kind in the can) because it is fine and would stick to the coating well.
