013Lately I have been looking for something that my toddler girl can make as a present for a few family members. My dad loves feeding the birds so I decided to search for a bird feeder craft that she could help make. I settled on creating a simple bird feeder with pipe cleaners, ribbon and Cheerios and we both liked it so much I though I’d share it here on the blog.

The bird feeder is clearly simple to make – just thread some Cheerios onto pipe cleaners, twist them together, and attach a ribbon. It has the added bonus of being an excellent fine motor skill activity for toddlers and preschoolers! Check out that concentration. It was challenging for her without being frustrating, which was exactly what I had hoped for.

She was thrilled that she had made it herself as a present for Grandpa. We will wrap it up and send it off with his other Christmas packages, likely with a photo of her working hard making it for him. It probably cost about $0.25 to make and will hopefully be enjoyed by all, especially the birds.

Lee loved his bird feeder so much! He was in awe when we checked it the next day and found the cereal eaten. He wanted to do it again, so we’re going to reuse the pipe cleaners to make another one!
