My ridiculously easy recipe for Devils Food cake mix cookies you can have in the oven in five minutes!
I can’t believe I’ve never thought to use cake mix for ultra easy cookies before. How did this not dawn on me?
Well once I saw some cake mix cookie recipes on Pinterest I had to try them myself. The result? These insanely good devil’s food cake mix cookies.
Learn how to whip these up in your own kitchen in under five minutes in this post.
Devils Food Cake Mix Cookies Ingredients
The beauty of cake mix cookies is that they only require three ingredients – a box of cake mix, oil, and eggs.
Just make sure that the cake mix is the standard size box (between 15-16 ounces) and NOT the smaller size that is sold at dollar stores. This recipe will only work with the regular size box of cake mix.
For the oil, either vegetable oil or canola oil work best since they don’t impart any additional flavor.
These oils will also work, but might make the cookies taste slightly different:
- Olive oil (light is better than robust)
- Avocado oil
- Peanut oil
- Flaxseed oil
- Grapeseed oil
Alternatively you can use melted butter in place of the oil.
I make my cake mix cookies with large eggs, so if you use a different size your results may vary. Ok, on to getting these cookies on the table ASAP!
How To Make Cake Mix Cookies
The process for making Devils Food cake mix cookies is the beauty of them – it is ridiculously easy!
First, beat two eggs in a large mixing bowl.
Then add the scant 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. I have found using slightly less than 1/2 cup of oil helps the cookies hold their shape and not flatten out too much as they bake.
I always use my Danish dough whisk for mixing any batter – it is probably my favorite kitchen tool that no one has heard of!
Then add the contents of the cake mix to the liquid ingredients and combine. Don’t overmix or the the cookies may turn out tough.
Next, I always use a cookie scoop to get my cookies a uniform size. That way they will all be evenly done when I take them out of the oven.
You can just scoop them onto a cookie sheet and bake, but I prefer to cover mine in sprinkles so they look better.
I achieve this by dropping them into a small bowl of sprinkles, then carefully rolling the dough slightly and placing it sprinkle-side UP on the cookie sheet.
This not only saves sprinkles but makes for an easier clean-up.
This is similar to how I roll my no butter snickerdoodle cookies in cinnamon sugar. They turn out looking very professional this way!
How To Bake Cake Mix Cookies
The third essential baking item in my kitchen are these silicone baking mats. They are game-changers when it comes to baking.
I suggest leaving plenty of room between cookies since they will spread some while baking.
This recipe makes about 18 cookies and it’s pretty much impossible to fit them all on a standard-size cookie sheet. You will likely have to use two trays.
I start checking them after 10 minutes in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven. You can test with a toothpick like you would a cake – of the toothpick comes out clean, they are done!
Defintely do not overbake these cookies or they will turn out crunchy and hard. Not what you want from a cake cookie.
Move them to a cooling rack to cool and enjoy right away. They are delcious when still warm.
Conclusion
One warning I will give about these cookies is that they are VERY sweet, especially with the addition of sprinkles. This may be a good or bad thing, depending on your taste buds.
If it isn’t obvious, you can use any variation of cake mix for this recipe and the cookies should turn out just as good.
I have tried many different flavors of cake mix and I actually like Devils Food cake mix cookies the best! For whatever reason the flavor works well as a cookie and tastes a little like a brownie cookie. So good.
I hope this post inspired you to give cake mix cookies a try if you’ve never had them. They are a great time saver and kids are pretty much guaranteed to love them.
