Is there dairy in cookies?
Many many cookie recipes have dairy in some form.
Most have butter or milk. This dairy free cookie recipe avoid both by using vegetable oil instead of the butter and milk.
How do you make cookies from scratch without milk?
These dairy free chocolate cookies are super easy to make and can even be made in bowl bowl if you are in a pinch!
You basically combine the oil, eggs, sugar, and vanilla first. This makes a wet batter that doesn’t need any milk.
Then you can add the dry ingredients on top or mix them in a separate bowl. If you do use one bowl, just make sure the baking powder is sprinkled evenly over the flour and there aren’t any clumps.
They key to getting these cookies to turn out looking lovely is to roll the dough into a ball and coat it with sugar before placing on the pan. This will give them the crackled top that is so inviting.
Chocolate Dairy Free Cookies Tips
Here are some tips and substitutions for these cookies:
- The dough will seem very oily. This is normal so do not be concerned.
- Be very careful to NOT overbake these. If you do they will turn out hard as rocks.
- The cookies will still seem soft and even slightly underdone when you take them out of the oven. It is okay – they will continue to bake on the pan and will firm up as they cool.
- You can substitute any oil for the vegetable oil – avocado oil and olive oil are two common substitutes.
I always bake my cookies on this non-stick silicone mat from Target. I never have cookies to stick to the pan and I don’t have to use wasteful parchment paper.

- 1 1/2 cups white sugar + 1/4 cup for rolling
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Mix the oil, sugar, egg and vanilla until smooth.
In a separate bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and gently mix everything together to form a thick dough. Do not over mix.
Form the dough into walnut-sized balls ( I use a small cookie scoop) and roll each ball in the sugar coating.
Place cookies a few inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until slightly brown on the bottom. Do not overbake or they will be hard as rocks!
Let cool for 2 more minutes on the tray. Move to a cooling rack.
