How I’m Using the SWORKIT App for FREE Personalized Video Workouts

Like almost everyone, I’m renewing my commitment to find time to exercise in the new year. I definitely slipped away from my usual 5 days per week of getting some form of exercise in during the holidays. ūüôĀ

Sarah (who blogs over at XO Sarah) wrote that she had success with the free app SWORKIT last year, so I decided to give it a try. I like it so much that I already want to share it with you! It really is like having a free personal trainer in your living room. 

SWORKIT has a bunch of different free workouts to chose from, including strength training, cardio, yoga and stretching. The workouts basically move you through a series of different exercises/moves in 30 second intervals.

Here’s what I like most about the workouts in the app:

  • You can customize how long the workout is – if you only have a short amount of time¬†to work out, you can set the timer to 10 minutes and still get in a quality workout
  • It times each exercise for you and even allows¬†time to change positions. It also gives you timed breaks!

  • They have videos that show how to do each exercise. I hate not knowing how to do a move and guessing if I am doing it right.

  • You can set a time goal for the week and track your progress. Right now I am aiming to get 45 minutes of interval training in per week. This isn’t much, but it is realistic for me right now in addition to my 4-5 times per week walks.

I have tried strength training¬†workouts, yoga and stretching, and I think the app works best for high intensity interval training (HIIT) and stretching. It didn’t make as much sense for yoga, since I wanted to move through the series faster than the timer suggested.

I think this app will help me stick with a workout regiment through the winter, when I often struggle to find the motivation to workout.
